SPEAKER BIO:
Imam Ibrahim Kazerooni, born in 1958 in Al-Najaf, Iraq, comes from a family of prominent Shiite scholars. He began his religious studies early and, after being imprisoned by Saddam Hussein’s regime in 1974, fled Iraq, continuing his education in Lebanon, Syria, Turkey, Iran, and later England.
Imam Kazerooni has taught a wide range of subjects, including Islamic law, theology, Qur’anic exegesis, interfaith dialogue, and human rights. He has lectured internationally and served in pastoral roles in various cities across the U.S. He has been involved in numerous interfaith and community organizations, including Housing Justice, the Interfaith Alliance, and the University of Denver’s Bridges to the Future program.
He has received several honors for his peacebuilding efforts, including the Faith to Faith Award (2005), the Martin Luther King Award (2007), and recognition in the Congressional Record for his work toward ending the Iraq war (2004). Imam Kazerooni holds multiple academic degrees, including a Ph.D. in Theology from the University of Denver and Iliff School of Theology.
He is currently the President and Director of the Islah Institute for Shi’ah Leadership. Previously, he served as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Detroit Mercy and Imam of the Islamic Center of America in Dearborn. Imam Kazerooni continues to be an active voice in interfaith dialogue, peacebuilding, and Islamic scholarship.
